Scholarship Season

The SAME JAX Scholarship Committee has been hard at work these past few months. Laureen Borochaner (USACE JAX), Chair of our Education and Training Committee, and Walter Reigner, Vice Chair of Scholarships, along with the rest of the evaluation board, have been hard at work helping review and award scholarships to our deserving High School and College students. Pictured below is Tom Fallin awarding one of our High School graduates, Sea Cadet Josh Klazkow of Nease High School.

What company/agency do you work for and what is your job title?

I am the Marketing Team Lead at The Blackledge Group, an 8(a) certified small, disadvantaged business owned by the Ho’omana Foundation, a Native Hawaiian Organization (NHO) that headquartered in Jacksonville, FL and specializes in environmental and construction services for private and public sector clients.

What have been your volunteer roles in the past and what is your role now for the Jacksonville Post?

I have served as the Vice Chair and Chair of Programs for the Jacksonville Post and currently serve as the Vice Chair for Membership.

Where did you attend college? What did you study?

I attended the University of Florida and was enrolled in the school of Journalism, then transferred to the University of North Florida graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Public Relations.

How long have you been a member of SAME and the Jacksonville Post?  Are you a member of others posts or have been in the past?

I have been a member of the SAME Jacksonville Post for close to 7 years and is currently enrolling for membership at the Savannah,  Pensacola and Space Cost Posts.

What’s your favorite Jacksonville Post memory?

The annual Christmas party at a former riverfront landmark, River City Brewing in 2017 was one of the best memories to date. It was an end of year celebration focused on fellowship with Post friends with an unexpected splash of entertainment. A large group attended including then President CAPT Monreal who were greeted by a UNF student violinist and cellist.  The dining tables were formally set, and the weather had just the right bit of chill off the river. The DJ enticed more than the regular dance enthusiasts to the floor and the food was top notch. Before the evening ended, a surprise live performance by some of the Post members to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy entertained the lively crowd who pushed closing time past the normal 3-hour event schedule.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy good food, family time, a little bit of exercise and being amongst good hearted friends.

What is your favorite quote(s)?
“NĀNĀ I KE KUMU” -  Look to your Sense of Place and sources of spirit, and you find your truth.
